Book Review: Anathema by Colleen Coble

10 out of 10! Another Christian Amish story, a genre of which I cannot get enough of!  Colleen does a great job of weaving in the beautiful history and meaning of Amish quilt making as well as telling about the Swedish Amish and not just the Pennsylvannia Dutch so commonly found in stories.

This story is definitely one where you find a piece of yourself within it.  Learning to forgive unfathomable offenses is a key theme in this work.  Themes in this book are not suitable for young children (spousal abuse, murder, hate crimes and more are woven throughout the storyline), but would be a perfect book to give your daughter if she has started dating.  Lots of good discussion material about making wise choices.

Book Review-The Water Wars

The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher is a solid read. I would give it an 8 out of 10 points.  The only reason it doesn't get more points is because it is not a series and so the character development was a little fragmented. I thoroughly enjoyed this story as an adult and it has been classified as Young Adult, ages 12 and up, but my 9 year old loved it as well.

The Water Wars

If you loved the Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins then this will give you another quick 'Hunger Games' fix. It's a single book, not a series, and it definitely has an environmental twist to it, but is nothing like The Lorax.  Really, it has to do with the blurred lines between good and evil people.

The basic premise of the book is that there is little drinkable water left on earth and two kids go on an adventure to rescue their friend. Along the way they meet people that are good and bad.  It is a fast paced book, with the characters jumping from adventure to adventure with very little room between.

Above all, this is a good book to read if you kids will read it too.  Then you can discuss how we are stewards of the earth, etc. and how to distinguish between good and bad.  This really does open up the discussion about how things that some people view as bad may in actually be good.  I think it is great for free-thinking people who don't always blindly accept the 'news' these days.
